MV Hondius Hantavirus Outbreak Under Surveillance in 12 Countries

The Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius, which departed from Argentina, has experienced an outbreak of the Andes hantavirus—a strain capable of human-to-human transmission. As of May 6, there have been 5 confirmed cases and 3 deaths. After the Canary Islands refused entry, the vessel has anchored off Cape Verde. The United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and 9 other countries are actively monitoring passengers who disembarked.
